Quick Glimpse of New York Fashion Week

Your Front Row Seat to New York Fashion Week Awaits: A fashion show is an event put on by a fashion designer to showcase his or her upcoming line of clothing. In a typical fashion show, models walk the catwalk dressed in the clothing created by the designer. Occasionally, fashion shows take the form of installations, where the models are static, standing or sitting in a constructed environment. The order in which each model walks out wearing a specific outfit is usually planned in accordance to the statement that the designer wants to make about his or her collection. The way that each outfit is presented on the catwalk isn’t necessarily the way the designer is trying to make people wear his or her creations in everyday life. In this instance, this is more of an intellectual–artistic construction of the designer for the same purpose of making a statement or presenting a particular idea.[citation needed] It is then up to the audience to not only try to understand what the designer is trying to say by the way the collection is being presented, but to also visually deconstruct each outfit and try to appreciate the detail and craftsmanship of every single piece. A wide range of contemporary designers tend to produce their shows as theatrical productions with elaborate sets and added elements such as live music or a variety of technological component like holograms, for example. Complete coverage of the runways and fashion weeks in New York and Europe, from menswear to couture to ready-to-wear to resort.

A Fashion Feast in New York City. In September 2007 Couture Fashion Week New York exceeded all expectations and delivered the largest and most distinguished audience of socialites, diplomats and VIPs during New York Fashion Week at a single event. Also attending were press and media from around the globe including Book Moda (Italy), CBS, Fashion TV, PBS, and television coverage from Turkey, Costa Rica, China, Russia as well as photographers, editors and writers from a full range of fashion and lifestyle publications. An Andres Aquino production, the three-day event featured beautiful runway fashion shows, world class entertainment, cocktail and networking parties creating a one-of-a-kind opportunity for participating exhibitors, designers and sponsors.

From the electrifying performances by award-winning violinist Alexander Markov and the Masacote Dance Company to the intricate garments by international fashion designers hailing from all corners of the globe, the shows were a feast for the senses. The venues this season were the Westin in New York’s world-famous Times Square and the exquisite St. Regis Hotel. At the Westin, the stunning atrium soaring seven stories was transformed into a glamorous catwalk and filled to capacity with appreciative guests enjoying the shows from the main floor as well as from the balconies overlooking the runway. The fashion shows at the St. Regis were held in the breathtaking Roof Ballroom with cocktails and exhibits in the Versailles Ballroom accompanied by the performance of accomplished guitarist Kenny Cunningham. Sponsors and exhibitors included Cunard, Trump, Susan Winston Diamonds, Bluefish Concierge, Palm Beach Real Estate, Soho Sanctuary and La Amada Residences Cancun.

The economic impact of Couture Fashion Week is significant as the event attracts designers and affluent guests to New York from as far away as Australia and Indonesia.

One of the hallmarks of Couture Fashion Week is the ethnic and racial diversity of the fashion models reflecting the melting pot of the city of New York and this season was no exception. The models represented a range of fresh faces and seasoned models, natives of many countries including Russia, Curacao, Mongolia, Albania, Colombia, the USA and many others. The hair and makeup styling was done by acclaimed stylist Federico Calce, who operates his own exclusive salon on Manhattan’s upper East Side; and Crystal Glass, Inc., and their respective teams. Again this season, as in the past, the event was assisted by the efforts of enthusiastic student volunteers from the Fashion Merchandising Program at Westchester Community College and the New England Fashion & Design Association.

The fashion collections were as creative and versatile as the variety of designers and the countries from which they hail.

One of the most exciting aspects of my job as a fashion editor is attending the shows at New York Fashion Week–which starts tomorrow (Yipee!) I used to dream about sitting front row at all the most important fashion designer shows and writing up reviews. 2008 spawned a tremendous flurry of fabulous Fashion Week shows. Let’s see, there were New York Fall and Spring shows, Milan Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, and LA Fashion Week. Oh, and don’t forget all of the ravishing Resort and Pre-Fall collections. Some of my faves were Proenza Schouler’s Fall line, Alexander Wang’s Spring offerings, and Balmain’s Spring collection in Paris. All different, all divine. Which were your favorites? Jog your memory, and check out all of our 2008 Fashion Week coverage.

A model presents a creation from the Badgley Mischka Fall 2009 collection during New York Fashion Week(纽约时装周), February 17, 2009. [News Agencies] I always wonder why models always put on an angry face…never smile…and try to look cool…looks like they are angry…Maybe they don’t like people staring at them? They’re trying to be serious on the T-stage…

Yeah, I don’t know what the hell that means either, but it’s a direct quote from the November issue of Teen Vogue, which has a crush on skateboarders. They’re so dreamy, you know?

Two instances of skateboarding in Teen Vogue’s November 2006 issue. First we’ve got a fashion spread with a puzzling tip for skinny jeans. Skateboarders wear skinny jeans, so they shot it at Owl’s Head skatepark in Brooklyn NY, and they even mention it in the spread. It doesn’t look nearly so cheery on Concrete Disciples.
